Elements of Geotechnical Engineering

Teacher: N.DEPOUNTIS
Category:
Elective
Semester:
Seventh

COURSE OBJECTIVES
The course provides the theoretical and objective knowledge related to the determination of the basic parameters – soil characteristics and the design and dimensioning methodologies of foundations for technical projects. Additionally, combined issues of quality control of geomaterials for embankments and aggregates as well as geosynthetics are described

COURSE CONTENT

  • Effect of stresses on the ground, geostatic stresses, active and total stresses
  • Shear strength of soils: failure of soil material, estimation of shear strength parameters – laboratory simulation, shear strength of cohesive and non-cohesive soils
  • Soil Deformation and Consolidation – laboratory simulation
  • General principles of foundations for technical works: permissible foundation stress, foundation types, design parameters, calculation methods, settlement estimation
  • Soil compaction and embankment construction
  • Inert materials and quality control
  • Geosynthetic materials: categories and types, characteristics, quality control, uses - applications.
  • Laboratory Tests: (a) foundation design, (b) Suitability of Soils for construction of embankments, (c) Quality Control of Aggregates, according to standard specifications (ASTM, BS, EN)
