Geology for Ground Engineering Projects and Rock Mechanics

Engineering Geology and Rock Mechanics

Teachers: N.DEPOUNTIS
Category: Mandatory
Semester: Seventh

COURSE OBJECTIVES
The course provides the theoretical and objective knowledge related to the recognition and description of technical geological conditions that define and define the design of technical works and their "harmonization" with the environment. Particular emphasis is placed on the selection and safe determination of the most "critical" parameters that will affect their construction and functionality.

COURSE CONTENT

  • Rock mass mechanical behavior: RMR and Q rock mass classification systems, GSI geological strength index. Applications in the construction of tunnels, slopes and foundations of technical works
  • Landslides: nomenclature and classification, factors contributing to their occurrence, protection and stabilization measures
  • Dams: classification, associated - accompanying projects, design and site selection criteria, technical-geological construction requirements, reservoir sealing, instrumental monitoring
  • Underground works - tunnels: change - stress distribution during boring, geological conditions and boring, mechanisms of fracture and deformation of surrounding rock mass, construction methods and support measures, NATM method and TBM method.
  • Laboratory tests of rock formations (Rock Mechanics) according to ASTM, ISRM and E103-84 standard specifications
  • Field exercises in rock mass classification for the design of underground engineering works – visit to engineering works.

The course "Geology of Technical Works and Rock Mechanics (CIV_8357A)" is taught as an elective in the 9th semester of the study program in the Department of Civil Engineering
